Haydon (eds.), Astrocytes in (Patho)Physiology of the Nervous System, 1 DOI: 10.1007/978-0-387-79492-1_1, © Springer Science + Business Media, LLC 2009 The history of the morphology and electrophysiology of the neuroglia , which was the historical term used for what are now termed astroglia or astrocytes, is briefly reviewed. The interpretation of these data around 1970 was that astroglia in situ represented a homogeneous electrophysiological phenotype with a major function, based on this, in maintaining a constant extracellular concentration of potassium ions ([K + ] o ). It was soon found that astroglia in situ played a major role in the uptake and inactivation of the synaptically released amino acid transmitters glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid. Subsequent studies in isolated systems, such as primary astrocyte cultures, greatly expanded this view to a more protean cell, with much wider properties in terms of transmitter uptake systems and release, a variety of voltage-dependent ion channels and varying membrane potentials and electrophysiological behaviour, and receptors for a large number of neurotransmitters.

Astrocyte heterogeneity in the brain: from development to disease
In the last decades, astrocytes have risen from passive supporters of neuronal activity to central players in brain function and cognition. Likewise, the heterogeneity of astrocytes starts to become recognized in contrast to the homogeneous population previously predicted. In this review, we focused on astrocyte heterogeneity in terms of their morphological, protein expression and functional as...
متن کاملComparison of Larval and Adult Drosophila Astrocytes Reveals Stage-Specific Gene Expression Profiles
The analysis of adult astrocyte glial cells has revealed a remarkable heterogeneity with regard to morphology, molecular signature, and physiology. A key question in glial biology is how such heterogeneity arises during brain development. One approach to this question is to identify genes with differential astrocyte expression during development; certain genes expressed later in neural developm...
متن کاملTitle : Comparison of larval and adult Drosophila astrocytes reveals stage - specific gene
We describe the genome-wide expression profile of Drosophila larval astrocytes for the first time. Among the expected GO categories revealed by this analysis were those required for glial support of the nervous system. Genes encoding vesicle secretion components were overrepresented in the dataset, indicating the importance of this process for astrocyte function. Comparison of these results wit...
متن کاملDevelopmental origins of astrocyte heterogeneity: the final frontier of CNS development.
Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the central nervous system, have diverse physiological roles in both health and disease, and exhibit phenotypic heterogeneity. In spite of the overwhelming evidence that astrocytes are a diverse population, there has been relatively little consideration of their molecular heterogeneity. In this review, we will summarize what is known about the heter...
متن کاملcAMP-induced stellation in primary astrocyte cultures with regional heterogeneity.
It is well known that increased cAMP levels in cultured astrocytes can convert flat polygonal shaped astrocytes into process-bearing, stellate astrocytes. In this study, we have examined the possible existence of astrocyte regional heterogeneity in morphological changes in response to cAMP stimulation. Primary astrocyte cultures were prepared from six different regions of neonatal rat brains, i...
